About Somerset Maugham

W. Somerset Maugham, born William Somerset Maugham, was a prominent British writer known for his novels, plays, and short stories. His life and literary career are marked by fascinating experiences and profound contributions to literature.

Born on January 25, 1874, in Paris, France, Maugham was raised by his uncle in England after being orphaned at a young age. His early years laid the foundation for his later literary exploration of human nature and societal conventions.

Maugham pursued a career in medicine, studying at King’s School in Canterbury and later attending Heidelberg University in Germany. He eventually trained as a doctor at St. Thomas’ Hospital Medical School in London.

Despite his medical training, Maugham’s passion for writing led him to abandon medicine and pursue literature full-time. He achieved widespread acclaim for his works, which often explored themes of human nature, morality, and the complexities of society.

Throughout his prolific career, Maugham authored numerous novels, including “Of Human Bondage” (1915) and “The Moon and Sixpence” (1919), as well as acclaimed plays like “The Circle” (1921) and “The Constant Wife” (1927).

Maugham’s writing style, characterized by its clarity, wit, and keen observation, continues to resonate with readers worldwide, cementing his legacy as one of the most influential writers of the 20th century.
